The book word-count formula
Estimated words = page count × average words per page. Enter the number of pages in the edition you are using, then keep or change the words-per-page value. The calculator multiplies the two safe values and rounds the result to a whole word.
Million Word Club begins with 250 words per page because it is the site's published default estimator. It is not a universal publishing fact. If you have sampled this book or know that its layout is unusually sparse or dense, replace 250 with a more suitable average.
The answer is always an estimate unless the input comes from a dependable exact word count.
Worked examples at 250 words per page
These examples use the same visible assumption so you can check the arithmetic. They describe estimated words in one book, not reading progress accumulated across several books.
For example, 200 pages × 250 words per page = 50,000 estimated words. Changing either input changes the result immediately; no value is submitted to Million Word Club.
- 50 pages × 250 words per page = 12,500 estimated words.
- 100 pages × 250 words per page = 25,000 estimated words.
- 200 pages × 250 words per page = 50,000 estimated words.

Why editions and page layouts change the answer
Page count is a physical-layout measure, not a word count. Trim size, type size, margins, line spacing, chapter openings, illustrations, tables and other design choices all affect how many words fit on a page.
Two editions of the same title can use different pagination. Illustrated books, graphic narratives, poetry, plays and reference works can also distribute text very differently. Use the page count for the edition in front of you and treat the result as approximate.
- Check that the page count belongs to the same edition or format.
- Lower the words-per-page value for a visibly sparse or highly illustrated layout.
- Raise it only when a representative sample shows denser text.
- Keep the assumption alongside the estimate so another person can reproduce it.
Use an exact count when it is genuinely available
A dependable word count from the publisher or author is more precise than a page estimate. If you control the manuscript or digital text, a word processor or text-analysis tool can count the actual words; check what that tool includes before comparing totals.
